Half Moon Bay's Traffic Engineering efforts focus on the design of streets and control of traffic - a critical factor in a small town where we want to maintain our character, while providing for the safe and efficient flow of traffic. Traffic Engineering works on signal timing, coordination with Caltrans on mutual signals and improvement projects, roadway striping improvements, the City's capital improvement projects, and parking on public streets.
An important current traffic engineering project is the Highway 1 Traffic Reduction and Safety Improvement Project (PDF).
The issue of "traffic calming" falls within Traffic Engineering, and the City wants to hear from you about issues you may be experiencing with neighborhood traffic. Please feel free to fill out this Traffic Calming Interest form - let us know your concerns, specific complaints, and suggestions.
It's important to note, however, that many of the typical traffic calming "devices" such as speed bumps or chicanes (road narrowers) are less-than effective, can be quite expensive, and tend to only move the problem to an adjacent street. Nonetheless, the City is developing a policy with regard to how neighbors might proceed, if it's determined that the issue may benefit from some kind of traffic calming project. That policy will be posted here when available.
