Reach Codes

Reach Codes are locally adopted building code requirements that increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and protect public health and safety by limiting natural gas usage in buildings.

On Tuesday February 2nd, 2021, the City Council conducted a study session on Reach Codes.  Following the study session, the City Council directed staff to draft an ordinance that eliminates natural gas usage in new construction.   Additionally, the City Council directed staff to evaluate options to phase out and ultimately eliminate natural gas usage in existing buildings, over time.

Staff will be returning with a draft ordinance at a future City Council meeting after receiving more feedback from the community and businesses. There will be ample opportunities for public involvement and input as Reach Codes are considered.
