[ARCHIVED] Pedestrian Safety Improvements on Main Street and Other Locations

The City is implementing a new project to update and improve pedestrian crossings and curb ramps at certain intersections on Main Street and other locations. Once completed, these improvements will enhance safety for all pedestrians, and are especially important for the students walking to and from school in these areas. The work is expected to begin in late April and continue for approximately two months, weather permitting. The total cost of the improvements is anticipated to be between $200,000 and $250,000.

Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists should use extra caution in the area during this work, which may include periodic daytime lane closures. Please be aware of workers, equipment, and signage.

Here is an overview of the locations and the planned improvements:

  • Lewis Foster Drive at Main Street - upgrade and re-stripe existing crosswalks and add rectangular rapid flashing beacons.
  • Stone Pine Road at Main Street - replace curb ramp on the southeast corner and re-stripe existing crosswalks and STOP legend painted on street.
  • Arnold Way at Main Street -  replace curb ramp on southeast corner, add new curb ramp on west side of Main and Arnold, and add crosswalks.
  • Poplar at Main Street - add new curb  ramp on southwest and northwest corners and east side of Main Street north of Poplar, add crosswalks, and paint STOP legend on street.
  • Mid-block Main Street (adjacent to 788 Main) - add mid-block crosswalk with bioswale landscape elements, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons (bioswales are drainage courses designed to help direct and filter surface runoff water).

  • Stone Pine at the shopping center - replace crosswalk with "sharkteeth" warning striping, and add/replace pedestrian crossing sign.

  • Miramontes at Church: replace existing STOP legend and limit lines on north and south bound lanes of Church Street, and remove/re-stripe existing crosswalk on Church Street north of Miramontes.

  • Kelly at Church Street: remove/re-stripe crosswalks.

  • Pilarcitos at Oak: add new crosswalk and add tactile tiles to each existing curb ramp.
