[ARCHIVED] City Council Candidate Nomination Period is July 16 - August 10

June 13, 2018 - Three of Half Moon Bay’s City Council seats are expiring this fall, and interested community members are encouraged to consider running for election. The required nomination documents are available from July 16 through August 10.

2018 Half Moon Bay City Council Election

The terms for three of Half Moon Bay’s five City Council seats are expiring this fall, and interested community members are encouraged to consider running for election. The required nomination documents are available from July 16 through August 10, in-person from the Half Moon Bay City Clerk’s office, located in City Hall, 501 Main Street.

Prospective candidates are welcome to call the City Clerk’s office at 650-726-8271 with any questions, and to make an appointment during the nomination period. Drop-ins are also welcome. Candidates must be residents of Half Moon Bay and registered voters of the City at the time nomination papers are issued.

Two of the three seats available for election are currently held by incumbents. The third available seat is vacant, following the resignation of the incumbent in June.

The City Council of Half Moon Bay is the City’s governing body, consisting of five elected members. The City Council sets priorities and policies, makes final decisions on all major City matters, adopts ordinances and resolutions, appoints the City Manager and City Attorney, and approves the annual budget.

City Council members are presently elected at-large to four-year, overlapping terms, and the Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and one to serve as Vice Mayor, on an annual rotating basis. The City is transitioning to district-based elections, with four Council districts and the mayor elected at-large. The first district-based election in Half Moon Bay is scheduled to take place in November 2020. The Half Moon Bay City Council typically meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Ted Adcock Community Center, 535 Kelly Avenue.

Half Moon Bay will hold a candidate orientation in late August/early September for those who have filed the necessary documents to run for office.
